think about it and imagine...

...it's the thought that counts

Facing Reality. Part I.

“The unreal is more powerful than the real, because nothing is as perfect as you can imagine it. Because its only intangible ideas, concepts, beliefs, fantasies that last. Stone crumbles. Wood rots. People, well, they die. But things as fragile as a thought, a dream, a legend, they can go on and on.”  --Chuck Palahniuk
Everyone day dreams. In class, at work, on the road. Anyone can day dream at any given time of the day. In fact, some people let their imaginations run wild many times a day. Its not hard to lose yourself in fantasy. But why do we do it? Why do we temporarily leave reality to dream of things that are often beyond our grasp?

Some people do it out of boredom. Their daily life or what they are currently doing is so mind numbing that they often "escape" into a world that only exists in their mind. Or they can dream about being somewhere else like back home in bed or on a faraway beach.

Others do it because they want to get away for a little while. Sometimes you just need to take a break from your busy or stressful life and quite a few people do it by day dreaming. Like sleep, day dreaming can help you relax. Even if its only in your head, doesn't dreaming about lazing about help you relax? Or it could have the opposite effect and make you want to be lazy. Either way, day dreaming can allow a person to take a very short "vacation."

I have been told by a close friend that the reason why they day dream is because their current reality is to harsh to deal with. At first, I didn't really understand what they meant, but after a lot of thought, I realized that what they said was true. I have now come to believe that day dreaming is a way to escape reality and leave behind responsibilities. Day dreaming is a way to avoid your life.
